What is 5G?

5th Generation mobile networks is the latest of the mobile telecommunication technology, an extension of the 4G system. Its target is to have high data transfer rate, decrease delay, save energy, lessen cost, increase system capacity, and mass device connection. With peak transfer speed of 10Gbps, the speed that used to be the privilege of using optical fiber, can now be achieved through 5G with relative ease.

5G: High Speed, Low Latency, Mass Connection

According to ITU, 5G possesses the characteristics of High Speed (eMBBB), Mass Connection (mMTC), and Low Latency (uRLLC). Comparing to its 4G predecessor, the speed of 5G increases 10 times, latency is decreased 10 times, while end-point connections is increased by more than 100 times per square kilometer.

With these traits, 5G is able to provide a steady foundation for new technologies, allowing dreams such as AI, IoT, ideas that was limited by computation power and data transfer speed, to become reality.

5G has two channels: Sub 6GHz and mmWave

5G consists of two distinctively different networking technology, with low, medium, and mm frequency. Low and medium frequency are typically placed in the same Sub 6GHz category, which is similar to the 4G LTE channel we are currently using; the second one is mmWave, with application frequency above 24GHz, belongs to high frequency 5G. Through the speed that mmWave offers, and the low cost and wide range that sub 6GHz has, choosing the appropriate connection for different circumstances allows 5G to satisfy wide range of users.

5G and the opportunities it presents

The main user demographic of 3G and 4G is individuals, but 5G is the stepping stone for AI, VR/MR, Metaverse, Big Data, and other ICT technologies, allowing business users to transform digitally. Business applications is the primary market for 5G, with IoT, unmanned vehicles, drones, long distance clinics, high definition streaming, smart appliances, and countless other applications, are all made possible with 5G.

Ford decided to integrate 5G network into its new manufacturing plant, which would vastly increase the productivity of the process through changes such as allowing workers to use flatscreens or touchpads to access data, or use their phones as scanners to instantly download information of automobiles and parts.

In the fields of robotic application, Ford is able to reduce the reaction and decision making timespan through the 5G's low latency quality, which would ultimately increase production rate.
